Thomas Drive on the eastern end is notably calmer, with lower-rise development, independent restaurants, and beach access that draws local families rather than spring break crowds. St. Andrews State Park anchors the far eastern end and feels genuinely removed from the resort strip despite being minutes away. First-timers should drive the whole length before settling on a home base.

Eating Well on the Beach

Fresh Gulf seafood is the right call here, and the options range from no-frills fish shacks to waterfront restaurants with proper wine lists. Pineapple Willy’s has been serving dockside seafood since 1982 and has earned its standing-room crowds honestly. Captain Anderson’s Restaurant, a local institution operating since 1967, is the kind of old Florida seafood house that takes reservations and does things properly. The seafood market at the back sells fresh catch to go. For cheap and good, the grouper tacos from the smaller family operations along Thomas Drive are frequently outstanding.

Shell Island and the Natural Side

Shell Island, separated from Panama City Beach by a narrow pass, offers a genuine wilderness experience surprisingly close to one of Florida’s busiest resort beaches. The island has no permanent development, and the boat trip over takes about ten minutes from the main beach area. Shelling is excellent on the Gulf side, and the calm pass waters are ideal for snorkeling, with clear water and a good population of sea life around the grass beds. Dolphin sightings in the pass are common and sometimes spectacular. The contrast between Shell Island and the strip behind you is one of the more striking moments a Florida beach trip can offer.
